Does Ireland Have Enough Sunshine for Solar Panels?

Solar panels do not need full sunshine to generate electricity. Although sunny days obviously produce more electricity, it is possible to generate electricity even on cloudy days in Ireland.

How Much Power Will My Solar Panels Produce?

As we mentioned above, this depends on how sunny it is. 2.4kW solar panels will generate 2.4kW in full sunshine at noon, but on a cloudy day they might only produce 3-500 watts.

Will Solar Panels Reduce My Carbon Footprint?

Yes. Producing your electricity onsite at your home eliminates the losses that are inherent in transporting electricity from the grid. This has great potential for reducing your carbon footprint.

Will Solar Panels Reduce My Utility Bills

Yes. It’s impossible to give exact figures because every household uses different amounts of electricity, but by generating your own electricity, not only are you reducing the amount you buy from the grid, but you also avoid paying charges like PSO, grid maintenance and VAT.

Systems are currently undergoing change to allow solar panel users to sell their excess electricity back to the grid, thereby further reducing costs. This should be possible from 2021.

What Maintenance Is Required?

Solar panels are low maintenance, but should be checked in line with the specific manufacturers recommendations.

Good quality solar panels hardly ever give any trouble. The rain here in Ireland generally keeps them clean. Very occasionally an inverter could be problematic, but this is rare.

What Is the Lifetime of Solar Panels?

Typically 25-30 years. They do last longer, but as they typically degrade at 1-2% a year, by the time they’re 30 years old you probably need to replace them.

Can I Get Batteries to Store Excess Electricity?

Currently we do not recommend batteries for home use as the cost is very high and availability limited.
