Heat Pumps Installation
What Are Heat Pumps?
Heat pumps are the new eco friendly way to heat your home. Very popular in Scandinavia, they have lower emissions than gas or oil boilers AND cheaper running costs. They have a longer lifespan than boilers, and require minimal maintenance.
Heat pumps are a common addition to home energy retrofits due to the benefit of avoiding fossil fuels.
SEAI Grants Available
You can get a grant from SEAI for a heat pump system – up to €3,500

How Do Heat Pumps Work?
Heat pumps don’t create heat, they move heat from one place to another similar to the way your fridge works. They circulate refrigerant liquids/gases between two heat exchangers with a compressor pump to extract ‘heat’ from the ground or air and transport it into your home. Heat is relative and heat pumps can extract useful heat from low temperature sources, even from air as cold as -20°C.
Are Heat Pumps Eco Friendly?
Heat pumps run on electricity, so do not use fossil fuels or emit CO2, which contributes to global warming. This also means that as time goes on and electricity is sourced more from renewable energy sources, heat pumps will become an even more eco friendly option.
Heat pumps are required to be 350% efficient. One unit of electricity makes 3.5 units of heat. Compared with modern A rated boilers that run at 90% efficiency, this is a huge improvement.
Heat pumps are a great option if you want to eliminate fossil fuel use from your home.
Is My Home Suitable For a Heat Pump?
You will need to have a heat loss indicator assessment to determine whether your house is suitable for a heat pump. We can take care of this for you and advise you on the results.
Good quality insulation is a prerequisite for installing a heat pump. We upgrade insulation for many of our clients before installing a heat pump.
Do Heat Pumps Heat the Water Too?
Yes, in combination with an immersion heater to raise the temperature to a pleasant bathing temperature.
What Size Heat Pump Will I need?
Typically, small houses require 5kW units, but 8.5kW is the most commonly used size. Larger units are available for very large properties at 11.2kW and 14kW.
Where Will the Heat Pump Be Placed?
Normally in the back garden or mounted on the wall with the shortest route to the hot water cylinder.
What Maintenance Is Required by a Heat Pump?
Heat pumps require a service once every year or two and rarely break down. Like your fridge or freezer, they hardly ever have trouble if they are left alone and properly maintained.
Heat pumps will last 15-25 years depending on level of use, maintenance and exposure.
